I am so sorry about the loss of your best friend. We are going to be putting our 13 year old huskie down in the next few days due to cancer of the spleen. Terrible cancer to have can cause bleeding to death internally. The one thing that will help me feel better is that she won’t be in any pain anymore. Please know that time will help you in your loss. God Bless You.

Thank you very much. It's so painful‚ even though he was a ginnie pig i still get attached to each and everyone one of my animals. I have 2 dogs‚ 2 birds‚ 3 lizards‚ 2 fish tanks‚ and now only one ginnie pig :( its so hard. The vet didn't say much about how to make him eat. I tried everything… lettuce‚ carrots‚ his normal food‚ timothy hay‚ some piggy treats. I still feel so empty inside. Last night  I had a dream that he was alive again and when I woke up I was crying :(

hi‚ i want to know if my ginni pigsare having babies because she is drinking alot of water and how do you if they are going to have babies.

Webmaster Comment: The first thing is to be sure to have plenty of water available, clean, fresh water. That's very important. Drinking more water could be an indication of being pregnant but it's also a possible indication of kidney problems, or lots of other problems. But if this is not excessive, then I'd not worry. You'll know very soon if she's pregnant because of her belly size. It doesn't take long. But keep the water coming. It would be horrible to be thirsty and not be able to get fresh, cool water. Let us know how it goes.

I want to know why my hamster always sleeps? He always sleeps and always eats but never is very active. He is a short haired male hamster‚he has a wheel but when he uses it its either very late at night or rarely in the day. Also he only uses it at night at the worste times‚when im either sleeping;or when im watchin my shows. He eats a lot!And im not a

Webmaster Comment: That's a very good question, Dani. Assuming he's not that old, you might consider taking him to the a Vet. That's a choice but you want to be sure it won't be tramatic.

However, my best guess is that he's bored. Think of it. Do you play with him enough, or give him interesting things to do, climb objects, tunnel with paper towel rolls, chew on toilet paper rolls, etc? The more he has to do, the less his enclosure will seem like a zoo, less like a prison. It is up to you to be sure your pet has interesting things to do. Can you put his cage into a closet at night or in another room. Or he has no choice but to sleep. They are no different from us, just smaller. That's the truth. Just pretend that you are your pet, in that cage. What is it you would like to do? And I don't mean watch TV! Be honest. Think like a small pet in a cage, locked up, forever.

Whatever you do, please do it in a safe manner. Finding things to do for your pet can get out of hand if it is not safe. Please be safe and please be careful.

When I was a kid, long ago, I had a dog which I kept on a chain outside, by his doghouse. I was too busy to play with him much. He always wagged his tail when I came by but I did not play with him much. I feel so guilty now. I wish I could return to those days and hug him, spend time with him, let him know he was loved. And that's all they really want, is some understanding and love, and something to do..

Let us know what happens, what you do.

Hi I have a gerbal & IT SEEMS AS IF HIS TAIL IS DRYING OUT & SHRINKING. It doesn’t seem to be bothering him. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this normal? What might cause this.

Webmaster Comment: I don't have a good answer. I've raised over 30 gerbils and don't remember such a symptom. But it could be you're more observent that I. I would assume that an older gerbil might tend to have those symptoms, but it would be best to take him to a vet. Have you searched the net for those symptoms? It could be a sign of a real problem, that is, if you really have noticed a change. In the meantime, be sure he has lots of fresh water, and a balanced diet, enough attention and exercise.

Where do i begin .. when your pet is gone… her name was sunshine, she was little and shy‚ she couldnt even fly‚ she was so sweet as a cockatail. It was like she new when you need some comfort and someone to talk to. She was more than a part of the family, she was our watch dog. When someone was at out house she would start screeming.

She died terribly on a september saturday on the 2nd. She dies of egg binding. We all miss her so much. It is hard to stay in the house withouth sunshine. Her name is now more than a name. She was our sunshine. Now that she is gone there is no light but the light in our heart where sunshine is. I know sunshine is shining in heaven. We miss her so much.

In loving memory ’’sunshine’’ september 2nd 2006.

Webmaster Comment: Dear Kasie, I'm so sorry for your loss. Sunshine sounds like such a beautiful little angel. I love birds. All birds. I couldn't picture life without them. I'm so glad there are people like you who give their heart and soul to these beautiful creatures. Kasie, please let us know how you're doing.

Cocoa was one of the best things i had in my life. He was the best chocolate lab anyone could ever ask for and he lived to be 11 1/2yrs old. His death was completely unexpected‚ he had cancer and showed absolutely no sign of it up until yesterday‚ we just barely made it to the vet today to find out what was wrong and his lungs were failing him‚ we had no options left. The only thing im greatful for is that his pain was short–lived. This has been the most horrible day of my life. I wish the tears would stop falling. RIP Cocoa 9–5–06. I’ll love you forever.

Webmaster Comment: Dear Lindsay, I've been away for a while and have just now read the most recent messages. My heart goes out to all of you who have lost your closest companions and friends. I have a chocolate lab also. Her name is Ruby. And like you, I love her so much. Your message is especially close to my heart because Ruby is going in for a biopsy on 9-13. I worry so much. Ruby is about six years old and my heart is filled with joy evey time I look at her. I wonder, how long will it be before I feel what you are feeling now. Lindsay, I hope the pain you are feeling will subside soon. Be glad to have known such a special and beautiful being. I am glad that for eleven years, Cocoa had you by her side.

We just lost our darling 10 year old golden retriever called Hamish this morning.  We didn’t know he was ill until a month ago. Turns out he had prostate cancer which was really agressive and spread like wildfire. At the moment‚ it feels like the hurt will never end. We know it will lessen as we have been through this with animals from hamsters to horses. The worst bit about all this is that his brother is totally lost without him. He has been cremated and we are keeping his ashes. I wonder sometimes why we bother but the joy they bring us whilst alive is incredible. Ann.

Webmaster Comment: Dear Ann, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel. With every beautiful animal I have lost, I always think I will not go through the pain again. But soon my heart opens for another animal in need. I hope soon this will happen for you too.

Hi. The only way to get through this is to remember that you gave Tucker a fantastic life. It doesn’t help at the moment‚ but believe me‚ later on it will save your life.  We lost our Hamish this morning. He was only ten and had prostate cancer. We know that we did all we could for him all his life right up to the end. He died at home with us around him. I hope this helps.

My girlfriend and I took our gerbil Wang to the vet because he wasnt eating and wouldnt open his eyes. When we got there the vet told us that he was very old and was suffering and the kinder thing to do would be to put him down. I’m a 28 year old guy and people will probably laugh at this but i was devastated and in tears‚ i’m still a little teary typing this message. It’s really put me off getting another pet ever again because this really shook us both up. I’ve put him in a little wooden box and i’m going to bury him tomorrow. My heart goes out to anyone that has to go through this.

Webmaster Comment: Hello Hippy! You sound like a real nice person, and an animal lover too! I've had gerbils and rats as pets many times. I cried for every one that died. Gerbils are much smarter than people realize. They love to play (when given the opportunity) I hope, in the future you'll get two gerbils. If they are young, you can learn to interact with them. Good luck!

It may sound impossible at the time and for a long time‚ but somehow after losing a very special pet you adapt. The pain will be with you forever‚ not as acute as on the day and the following weeks‚ but it’ll be there. But so will be all the memories‚ the remembrance. And even if you make room in your heart to love again‚ remembering is like having a treasure no–one can ever take away.

Bless

i want 2 kno what it means if my ginni pig keeps making noise and he dont sleep at all during the middle of the night do that mean anything

Webmaster Comment: Lady, By itself sleeping most any time does not mean much. Making noises can be quite normal. However, if your pet is sleeping more than 10 or so hours a day, he may be quite bored. What have you given him to do?

Of course, making a strange noise could be the sign of a problem, and best to take your pet to a vet. But by far, more than likely, it's probably the sign that your pet is attempting to get your attention, especially if he's bored. They are smart little creatures! They know how to get your attention, believe me. You might try keeping him busy, playing with him, giving him things to do, placing SAFE things in his cage to keep him busy. Even toilet paper rolls to chew on can do the trick, but they need much more. Think of it. What would you do if you were locked up 24 hours a day and had too little to do?

Now, I'm not saying you don't play with him enough but give him lots to do and plenty of activity and I bet you he will sleep more. And don't worry if he's not sleeping at night. That's not at all unusual.

I just got a ginnie pig for my four year old daughter. She loves it and he seems to like her.The question is how much do i feed him.He has a bowl of pellets some hay and I found out he loves carrots. How many carrots can i give him a day‚and do I keep his food bowl full.

Webmaster Comment: I don't raise Ginnie Pigs so I cannot say. But it seems to me that you should simply keep him supplied with as much as he can eat without there being leftovers or a mess left behind. This will give you a good idea of how much to feed him.

He took him to the vet in our town. When I called the vet‚ they had no idea what i was talking about.

I think that before u consider a ghost to do some research on the house. If your dog just started to reached this way‚ you should watch the Dog Whisperer or do some research on this type of behavior. I know it sounds dull‚ but it is what u have to do to keep your dog safe. Also‚ she could be hallucinating and you should get a check–up.

My gerbil loves to chew! he’s always escaping‚ too‚ and if i don’t catch him immediately‚ he’ll nibble something. He’s already eaten two phone chargers‚ and a computer sound speaker – what can i do to distract him from wires? i am also aware of the risk of him eating a live wire and dying! And‚how old would a two or one and half year old gerbil be in gerbil years?

Webmaster Comment: A one year old gerbil is about 30 years old. So, a two year old gerbil will be around 60 years old. Our gerbil, Booboos, lived for five years but that's very unusual. The average life spam for gerbils is about two years. However, if they live in a home which takes care of them well, the average life span is more around three years.

You need to place something for your gerbil to chew in his cage. Lots of it, such as paper towel rolls cut into smaller rolls, etc. You can buy chew toys at your pet store. But every gerbil needs to be kept busy and have something to chew.

my ginni pig is pregnent can they be to young to have baby pigs and there is two females in the same cage will the other hert her babys

Webmaster Comment: The answer to both questions is no. If she is pregnant then she is not too young. And the other female will probably help take care of the babies. It would be quite rare for a female, or male to hurt the babies. Be sure they have plenty of food, exercise, attention, water and a clean healthy environment, away from noise and other stress, then all should be great. I think you can relax and just enjoy the experience with them. But I do know that tweleve year old girls are too young! Remember, I told you first. - Jim

I’m trying to contact the person who healed Sylvia‚ the crow.  I need to ask her advice regarding a crow that I have in my care with a broken wing.  It is the third crow my boyfriend and I have found in two months.  We took the last two to the Audobon (spelling?)Society and they put both to sleep.  I can’t find a vet to help us and we can’t bear to put it to sleep.  We have tried to tie it’s wing with a homemade sling but he is very smart and removes it every time.  His wing is getting worse and I’m afraid it may get infected.  Do you have any advice?  This is a timely manner. Please email me.

Thanks.

Billie Jean

Webmaster Comment: We spent $900 to have a vet operate and place a metal pin splint into Sylvia's wing. Yes it was expensive but it was worth it. But if you do this, you must understand that your crow will never fly correctly again, no matter what. The best you can really hope for is that your crow will be able to fly from tree to tree but never high in the air with other crows. This is a big decision for you. First, you'd have to find the month, then the vet who will do the operation. Then you may have to find a place or build a place outside for your crow to spend the rest of its live, which could be many years. It worked out for us but took tons of energy and time. Please let us know how it goes. If you'd like me to call you for more info please leave a phone number. Jim
