Subject: HELP! Guinea Pig question! Dena, 42 yr old Female Date:Tuesday, September 06, 2005 @11:12 AM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] Help!! I need advice‚ quick! I have a 9 mo. old male guinea pig named Chocolate. 2 days ago I purchased a 3 mo. male guinea‚ Gizmo‚ so Chocolate wouldn’t be lonely. They are getting along beautifully. I took Gizmo to the vet this morning for a routine checkup and it turns out Petco sold me a female guinea‚ whose name has changed to Gidget! Ooops! Now what? I hate to separate them because they love each other. What if she is pregnant? Is she too young to be pregnant? What are my options? Get another cage and get each guinea a partner? I wasn’t wanting to be the owner of 4 guineas‚ I already have 4 kids‚ 3 labs‚ a cat‚ a fish‚ and a husband. Help!! I need advice quickly. |

Subject: Oscar Lina , 23 yr old Female Date:Wednesday, October 19, 2005 @10:38 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] Hi‚ I just wanted to say that reading the information on your website has been a real comfort for me. My dog Oscar (my beautiful 13 month old rotti) passed away very suddenly three weeks ago. Oscar was everything to me and my husband and I have been finding it so difficult to deal with the fact that he is no longer with us. The shock of losing what seemed to be a perfectly healthy dog has been unbearable. We are not certain what the cause of death was‚ and this has added even further to the pain we have felt (and I have been riddled with guilt wondering if it could have possibly been something we did wrong). I have found that very few people understand what Oscar’s death has meant to me‚ and it is often minimised by others. Oscar was/is my best friend and I just miss him so much. I wish I could have protected him from whatever it was that caused his death and I am so upset that I was not there for him when he died (I came home to find him in the back yard). Your website has helped me to understand that I am not the only person who feels these many emotions. I have also found that there is little information for those who lose a pet suddenly‚ so more guidance and support in these situations would also be beneficial. Thank you again and all the best. |

Subject: Oscar Webmaster, 45 yr old Male Date:Friday, October 21, 2005 @12:52 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] Lina: Thank you Lina for Sharing with us. As you must know‚ there is no way anyone can really stop the pain‚ or the guilt we all have when our pet dies. Even saying the word pet seems too little. Loved one is better‚ but perhaps overused. But I guess it fits. We always feel guilty‚ no matter what. The mind always finds ways to ask‚ IF ONLY‚ etc. It’s so normal and expected. And there is nothing we can say to really make you feel much better‚ except to know we all feel the same way. Guilty in some way. But the very idea that you feel guilty‚ or feel such love‚ demonstrates your love and the love you gave Oscar. With all the pain in the world‚ it is really wonderful to know there are other humans who feel the same as we do about our pets‚ about our dear loved ones. So‚ I won’t try to talk you out of your pain. It’s important that you go through it‚ that you cry‚ that you feel the sadness‚ but also the glory that you were loved and that you loved Oscar. And Oscar knew you loved him. And that has to be enough‚ because‚ well‚ that is what it’s all about. Love. And the memory of love. Jim |

Subject: HELP! Guinea Pig question! Webmaster, 45 yr old Male Date:Friday, October 21, 2005 @1:07 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] DENA: Sorry for the late reply. Looks like you have three choices: 1) Keep them together. If might mate but this is not for certain. You could end up with tons of pets. So, this is a very important question. Are you prepared to be a "father" to tons of little ones? 2) Keep them separated. If you do this, then you need to be a really great friend to both pets. They need lots of love. They get very lonely. How would you like being kept in a cage, by yourself, and the humans do not play with you? That would be horrible. So, if you do this, play with them, always, all the time, and they will really bond. Or you could consider finding the same sex to put in the cage with them. That means more pets but it could solve the problem. But you'd have to find the correct sex, the same sex, and be certain of it, or you'll have more problems. Sometimes males don't get along well, so, it is a chance you take. But again, they love attention. Lots of it. And soon they will trust you to be gentle. Never punish a pet for biting you. They do this only because they're scared. Earn their trust and you will be rewarded by a long loving friend. Or in this case, "friends". 3) Find someone else who wants a pet and is willing to take the time to be their friend, on a daily basis and play and care for them. Let me know who it works out, one way or the other. And again, sorry fore the late reply. Jim |

Simon was 17 years old I had him ever since I was a little girl. He was my best friend. He was always by my side when I’d go to sleep he’d come and crawl under the covers with me and I’d haft to put my arm around him instead of my boyfriend. He’d let me give him a bath and blow dry his hair. He loved playing with his toys and my other cats. He was always the one to confort me when I was down and crying. He’d take his paws and touch my face when i was sleeping and he was hungry. We did everything togather. I still cry everyday. I feel really lost and sometimes I feel guilty.. I woke up that morning to this really weird crying out noice. I thought him or my other cat may have had a hairball. I ran to my other bedroom to find the other cat sleeping I walked back to the kitchen to find Simon taking his last few breaths. I went and woke my boyfriend up and came back and he was dead. I did mouth to mouth I tried everything I could to bring him back he was gone. I took him to the vet the following morning and I had a atopsy done and had him cremated. Simon had had a heart mur–mur and it caused a blood clot in his heart and it rupted. She said if he hadn’t had that he would have lived several more years. In memory of my baby I had a picture of him tatoo’d on me so he will never be forgotton. I feel the pain that everyone has of loosing a loved animal‚because I have lost several. |

If you can’t find this website it said the guinea pigs need to nurse there mother for 2 weeks. There can also have solid foods and water but they need to nurse as well. The age of weaning is 3 weeks. |

Quite often people wait too long and the pet will suffer. But it is a no win situation. You will feel guilty no matter what you do. It’s part of the process so please try not to feel too guilty. I’m sure you did the right thing and your love is obvious. |

Try to be more patient and if they do bit‚ don’t jerk back or hurt them. Think how you would feel if you were the little gerbil and some 90 foot monster picked you up. You have to earn their trust by showing them that they don’t need to fear you. That takes time‚ and love. |

I've been very busy. I wanted to try to ask you to please try not to feel guilty. But even asking you not to feel guilty is really impossible. You can only share what the rest of us have felt, as you are not feeling, the feeling of loss, but also of love. We all feel guilty‚ no matter how well we bonded. It’s natural. But it still hurts and hurting is part of the healing process. Yes‚ Simon how a very long and wonderful live and he can no longer heel but Simon knew how much you loved him. That’s for sure‚ and somehow that makes you and the world a much better place. And for a while‚ Simon was part of it‚ and now the rest of us know and understand how you feel. |

Subject: Finding it hard Fran, 39 yr old Female Date:Friday, January 20, 2006 @5:17 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] i came home tonight to find my 15 and 3/4 year old darling cat had passed away on the floor at the entrance to our living room. She had been poorly very recently but had been making some progress of late. To be honest I thought I was going to lose her two weeks ago when she wouldn’t eat and was being sick on an empty stomach. I did get her to eat though from my hand and then from a plate‚ but only in the living room. She was just at the vet yesterday and she had put on weight (100g) – she had lost quite a bit recently‚ from 3.3kg to 2.9. This morning she had been not as good as the last few days and seemed to be slow to respond to cuddles and chat‚ seemed really vacant and unconnected plus she had not eaten any of the steamed fish i had made her the night before. She has been a hyperthyroid cat for 1 and 3/4 years and on meds. I woke to find her this morning sleeping curled up in this spot at the entrance to the living room‚ alive at this point. But this is the same place I found her tonight dead and cold. My partner and I have raised a toast for her on numerous occasions tonght – she was the best cat I have ever had and i will miss her so much. RIP Chloe baby.

Subject: my baby girls g-pig Jim, Date:Tuesday, January 31, 2006 @5:52 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] One has to be extremely gentle with all such small animals. Consider being held by King Kong. A very gentle squeeze may be okay but anything which promotes a squeel is probably too much. Depending on the age of your daughter‚ you should quickly try to instill the idea of empathy‚ what it would be like if she was held by a being so much larger. She needs to understand soon or it would be best to limit her access to the Dinny. Children can easily hurt small animals so they first need to understand‚ and of course‚ that responsibility is yours. |

Subject: Snitzel susan, 48 yr old Female Date:Thursday, February 09, 2006 @10:02 AM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] My dog Snitzel died on Monday‚ Feb 6th 2006. Three days ago‚ it seems like 3 years ago and 3 seconds ago. It amazes me how much I miss Snitz. I expected to miss his running out to greet me when I drove home from work but its much more than that‚ I swear I can’t go an hour without thinking of him and when I think of him the tears just start leaking out. This has thrown me and I didn’t expect that. Not that I expected anything‚ I mean his death was such a shock. Snitzel was just a little over a year old…I didn’t expect a dog that young to die and I didn’t expect to be so completely torn up over the death of a pet‚ I mean I’m an adult not a child. I love my pets but I don’t think I knew exactly how much I loved that sweet dog until he was gone. Well I have babbled long enough‚ I guess I just really need to talk about Snitzel and its such a personal thing it hard to open up to people I know…that sounds wrong doesn’t it‚ but the fact is not everyone knows what its like to love an animal so much and most don’t think its proper. So I say nothing and just leave them to assume I’m PMS or Menopausal and thats the reason I’m moody and breaking into tears at odd times. Its easier to speak of Snitzel to people I don’t know but who probably understand if they are visiting a site like this. Thank you for listening

Subject: Snitzel Lina , 23 yr old Female Date:Tuesday, February 14, 2006 @3:09 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] Hi Susan‚ I am so sorry to hear about Snitzel. I lost my dog at only 13 months too – and it was a sudden and shocking thing to deal with. I know exactly how you feel – and it was only until recently (months after his death) that I have felt like I am getting back to normal. I cried every day for many months and no one seemed to understand my pain. I lost my best friend in such an awful way and I just felt so alone. But I really want you to believe that with time it really really does get better. Soon enough your memories of Snitzel will turn into happy memories rather than creating more tears. I never thought I could have another dog again‚ but my husband bought me a puppy recently and to my surprise I feel that my first dog lives on in this new little puppy that I am sure I will love just as I did the first. This time will be hard – and do not let anyone tell you how you should feel. Grieving for a pet in many ways is harder than grieving for people because no one understands the strong bond between pets and their owners/carers. Just hold on to what you loved about Snitzel so much and soon you will feel peace. All the very best. |

She was only 6 years old. She was such a loyal and trusting friend. It all happened so quickly and I miss her so very much. The only signs she showed of something being wrong was over the Australia Day long weekend she went off her food. We were in the midst of a bush fire crisis and put her not eating down to the stress of everything going on. On the Tuesday I took her to the vet and they felt a lump in her stomach and admitted her to hospital to re–hydrate her and take xrays. They operated at mid–day the next day and found she had a huge aggressive cancer the size of 2 footballs attached to the wall of her stomach and it had already spread to her liver and bowel. The vet said there really wasn’t any other choice but to |

Webmaster, 47 yr old Male Date:Saturday, April 08, 2006 @4:34 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] I'm not sure what you mean be weds, unless you mean weeds. If it is weeds, then that may be the problem. Place your gerbil on a strict diet of standard gerbil food‚ the kind found in a pet store. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water‚ is comfortable and safe‚ out of the traffic‚ noise‚ and stress. Then leave him alone‚ and hope he improves. If he does‚ change his eating diet to stanard gerbil food. The idea here is to be sure the symtoms are not something caused by food or excessive stress. He may have a sickness‚ old age‚ or something else he may nor may not survive. Check on him once in a while so he knows you care‚ then let hinm try to recover. Or‚ you can take him to a vet. However‚ half the time the stress of that kind of visit can be more harmful. |
