I think it is always wise to get two animals of the same breed. This way…when you have other things to do‚ your pets can still enjoy each others company. Also‚ always make extra efforts to hold your pets and play with them. They love it! |

You would come in all covered with it just as happy as can be. I still hear you coming in your doggy door and walking around in the kitchen. I check still to see if your bowl has water. I know you loved me as much as I loved you. You have given me so much joy. Thank you for being in my life for the last 10 years. I wish I took more time that day to insist the doctor do what he needed to do to help you get better. I am so so sorry‚ I feel you left before your time. I miss you so much it is hard to breathe. My heart is so broken‚ I don’t know how it will ever get fixed. I miss you‚ please rest in peace. |

I think I know the answer but wanted to check. I have a little pig just a few months old and love her so. Her name is Anabelle. She always looks forward to seeing me in the morning when I go to the barn. Most girls my age are so intersted in boys but not me, well, at least not too much. I prefer to spend my time around our farm, loving to play with flowers, my mother, make cookies and just be friends with all our wonderful animals. Is that too silly? |

Subject: Kruger & Serengheti Trina, 27 yr old Female Date:Saturday, April 09, 2005 @12:44 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] I bought my first gerbil 2 weeks ago. Her name is Kruger. I absolutely love watching and playing with her. Hours of entertainment. I ended up buying a book about gerbils and soon realized I should have a companion for her. So last week I bought Serengheti. I have kept them apart in seperate cages and have often swithched them‚ letting them get familiar with their smells. I have put them in the cage together a couple time. Of course they just chase each other around. After awhile they calm down and I seperate them again and do the swithching routine. Well I have finally got their cages hooked together and Serengheti spends most of her time in the tubes waiting to see if Kruger will come around. She squeaks alot and still seems quite nervous. (Serengheti is younger than Kruger.) Kruger seems to be getting used to Serengheti but still likes to chase her. I think she wants to play‚ but the younger Serengheti thinks she is still in danger. My question to you would be‚ how do you know when they have accepted each other enough to STAY in the came cage together? I do not want to keep them in the same cage if there is still the threat of them killing each other. I am open to any advise I can get. Thank you. Trina |

Subject: Kruger & Serengheti Jim, Date:Saturday, April 09, 2005 @8:49 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] Trina, Thank you for sharing this with us. Good names. And Serengheti is also a desert, right? I believe gergils originated in that kind of climate. Anyway, I think you should most certainly place your two gerbils together, into the same cage, unless you see some obvious reason not to. But give them room in the cage so they can have their own corner‚ their own space if they want it and just watch them for a couple days. They’ll probably eventually sleep together. There is only very minimal chance they will hurt one another‚ especially if they are both females. Gerbils are territorial but in this case there is no obvious reason to defend a territory‚ unless they are not getting enough to eat and drink. They need each other‚ especially if you don’t play with them lots. As far as knowing when to place them together and keep them together, well, I'm not sure I know of any particular sign, other than seeing that they do not fight. Even if they don't bond right away and sleep piled upon each other, they would be much better together. Think how we would feel locked in a cage in a zoo, when there is a perfectly good example of our own species in the next cage. So, I guess the answer to your question is that they are ready if they don't really tear into one another. Now, they will probably have disagreements but unless they really lock into one another, they will almost certainly learn to get along. If one gerbil is much older than the other and becomes very sick, and they have not bonded, there is a greater chance the healthy gerbil will attack the other. You did say one was older than the other but you'd be the best to judge if it's lots older or not. As I'm sure you know by your reading, Gerbils are social and even two females will enter into a deep bond. Our Booboos was female and when her female companion died‚ Booboos was grief stricken. It was so incredibly visible. She stood guard over the body of her female companion she had known for nearly four years. I burried her companion after a day and moved her to a new cage and then I began to interact with her. Or rather‚ she with us first‚ by banging on her water bottle to get some attention. Her companion was gone‚ but she then had us. It sounds like you already have the right idea so I'd just continue what you're doing, being careful. If you think they need more time‚ just use your own instincts. Migbht just continue to keep their cages together, where they can move back to their own cages if they wish. If they want to bond, they can. And one cage is much easier to clean. Gerbils love tender treatment and bond and trust much faster that way, as I'm sure you know by now. We'd love to have you keep us updated on their progress, and what's going on. Best regards, Jim |

Serengheti and Kruger are both National Parks in Africa. I found the names appropriate…:) Well I ended up hooking there cages up together yesterday by tubes so they could escape each other if need be. They chased each other around little but ended up leaving each other alone with the occasional curious check ups‚ to see if the other was still there. There didn’t seem to be any apparent reason to seperate them last night so I let them be. Today I left for a few hours after tending to them and making sure all was well and came home to find them |

Subject: Re-introducing gerbils Faith, 25 yr old Female Date:Thursday, April 14, 2005 @10:56 PM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] Hi; I was looking for some advice on my gerbils‚ and it looks like the people on here know a lot. My gerbil Pacifican has recently gotten over a serious illness (he had real trouble breathing; the vet figured it was pneumonia). Anyway‚ we had to medicate him for 3 weeks and separate him from his companion‚ Atlantean. Now I did let them together for brief periods‚ but I noticed that Pacifican’s neck fur was all missing. At first I thought the other gerbil did it‚ so I separated them immediately and continued to separate them throughout the treatment. Later‚ I realized that he didn’t really get better‚ and I figured out that he was over–aggressively grooming himself to get the excess medicine that dripped onto him out of his neck fur (it’s very sticky); it’s growing back now that he isn’t on the medicine anymore. So anyway‚ now he’s all better‚ and I’ve been trying to gradually re–introduce them by switching their cages and observing them together in their play area. I haven’t seen any signs of aggression‚ but whenever Atlantean gets near Pacifican‚ Pacifican stiffens up like he’s scared. As I’ve said‚ I haven’t seen Atlantean attack him‚ and I only put them together for a brief period while I was present. Has anyone else had anything like this happen? Should I just continue what I’m doing until Pacifican |

I had her sence i was just little. She died a year febuary. She didn’t desearve it though. She was staying at my aunts house because she loves the country. Some idiot hit her with their car and didn’t bother to say anything. When my grandpa went to leave he heard yellping. He was expecting what was to come. He got out of his truck and seen her lying there legs broken‚ ribs broken ..there was no help for lassie now it had been to long. My grandpa with the kindest heart towards animal did what he had to do. We couldn’t even aford to take her to the vet to get put alseep. So we walked her out to the field and did it… you can amagine how. My grandpa still crys about this and hates himself for it but he just didn’t have another way to stop all her pain. I didn’t find out about this for two weeks after. But you know what i feal really good because the last thing i said to her was Lass i love yeah lots and I’ll see yeah soon. |

He seemed to deteriorate very rapidly in just a few hours so we agreed with the vet to put him to sleep as recovery appeared unlikely and he was suffering. At the moment everything at home reminds us of our loss‚ but we keep talking about happy memories of him because he was an endless source of fun. The websites have helped a lot‚ so thank you to all who take the time to give advice and information about pets. |

Subject: Re-introducing gerbils Jim, Date:Thursday, May 05, 2005 @11:00 AM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] I had a gerbil who, over a few weeks period, actually chewed at his foot to the point that it was eaten up beyond the ankle! That was horrible to watch and the vet had no idea what caused it. Afterward he hobbled around well enough but chewing your own foot away cannot be some kind of good experience. It horrified us. All I can say is to watch them carefully, try your best to place them into situations which are non-competitive, relaxing, and caring. Gerbils respond so well to gentle treatment. Imagine how we'd feel if a 200 foot giant picked us up too aggressively. The symptoms you gave us seem pretty normal for aging gerbils. And it's so incredibly difficult to not only diagnose gerbils, because their blood vessels are so small, but getting much visual feedback is also difficult. I always try to get to their level so I can see their faces. Not too many people take the time to watch the faces of gerbils. You'd be surprised at what one seems to learn, and how much more we're ready to bond once we relate to another being by seeing their mouths move, and yes, their "expressions". My guess is that Atlantean is afraid or perhaps a bit apprehensive of Pacifican because he can smell or sense an illness. That's understandable. Unless they have bonded, I'd be cautious of Atlantean. But I wouldn't want to suggest you separate them if there is a chance Atlantean can give comfort. Booboos gave such comfort to her companion when her companion was dying. Most vets don't know how to treat gerbils, to say the least. You can spend far too much money, and subject your pet to unnecessary medical "treatment" from vets who prescribe too much medicine when not needed. From lots of experience, I'd say, in most cases, about the only effective medicine for gerbils is an antibiotic, when they need it, such as with pneumonia. Vets should take the time to find a liquid medicine for you. If they give you pills and expect you to grind it up and push it down their throats, and are insensitive, or in too much of a hurry to deal with this, tell them so, and find another vet. It's a big business and they are out to make a buck. There are some great vets who are in the business because they love animals, but all too often, too many vets forget their original callings. So, be aggressive and don't give up on asking questions and be willing to question the answers. Sorry for the soapbox but some of what you said reminded me this needed to be said. Jim |

Subject: my poor little kitty :( Alex, 30 yr old Male Date:Tuesday, May 17, 2005 @11:06 AM pacific time [Click here to Reply to this message] [View Thread] I just need to get it out in words. My albino longhaired cat was attacked by a raccoon last night and was mangled pretty badly. She could not walk very well and the raccoon acted strangely (rabies?) There was blood all over her perfect coat and it happened to be pouring rain so she was soaking wet and shivering. She was so helpless and the nearest animal shelter was an hour away. I had no choice but to put her down myself. I pulled out my .380 and shot her in the back of the head. It was the most horrifying experience in my life but I did not want her to suffer anymore. It took everything I had in me to pull the trigger. I just couldn’t help thinking about what it was going to be like before I did it. The poor cat had no idea it was going to die when I put her in the truck with me to bring her into the woods. That image of her as she twiched for a few seconds after I shot seemed like an eternity. I will never be able to forget it. I hope that no one ever has to do anything like this. I can’t seem to stop thinging about her. Everytime I do‚ all I can do is cry and pray that God forgives and understands why I had to do it. It just breaks my heart :( :( |

Your story is very touching for many reasons. It sounds like you are having a very hard time. Bruno sounds like he had a very happy doggie life. He was healthy for most of his years and he was loved dearly by you and your family. I don’t want to sound like Dr. Phil ( he gets on my nerves) but I think you need some very special attention by your loved ones. I am willing to bet you are the good mother to every living creature that crosses your path. And for that reason you are VERY SPECIAL. You are recovering from a serious surgery and no doubt you are going through a roller coaster of emotions. Let your loved ones care for you and give you their shoulder to cry on. Until then‚ know that you have many who hold you in their prayers. |
