Hey everyone!
My two little sisters both got gerbals a while back at differant ages.
They live in two seperate cages and I usually take care of them because my sisters dont! lately though the younger one has been biting and acting out of control‚ I cant even grab its food dish without wearing a heavy duty glove! We put the two gerbals together to see if they are lonely but they just started fighting! What can I do to calm the one down and  get them to let me hold them again? or‚ What are some things that will make them happy?

The most usual reason is that the gerbil is scared‚ has had a bad experience. They’re like us in that respect. They don’t bite just because they mean. On the other hand‚ there could be some kind of territorial mode developing. Males placed together will too often fight‚ even if they are father and son. Or if one gerbil is sick it might attack the other. But biting humans is generally related to being frightened. It might take a while to gain the confidence again. But I'm sure you can do it if you're careful and very patient. But please try. Just imagine how you might feel in the same situation. The two sisters may have accidentally hurt the gerbil and that can explain it. How would you feel if a huge giant stepped on your toes?

You can take her to a vet‚ which is the best and safest. But if you can get her to be still and not too afraid‚ you can do this yourself but only if it’s not a bad experience. And be sure to remove only a small amount or you could injure the ginnie pig’s feet.

I’d keep them together. Males can make very good parents. Give them a chance to be natural. Just make sure they have fresh water and enough food‚ and room enough if one of the parents wants to get away for a bit.

They do have their own smell but it’s not really unpleasant unless you don’t keep their pen clean‚ give them fresh water‚ and generally keep them healthy. If they wallow in their own urine they can begin to smell‚ just like some people I know. :–)

Just two days ago we lost our beloved dog Sparky.  Sparky was more than just a pet.  He was a friend‚ a companion‚ a light at the end of a dark tunnel‚ a kindred spririt‚ a blessing from god.  His way of making you smile when you needed it most was undeniable.  He was a good dog with a heart of gold.  He just loved unconditionally and we loved him too.  Sparky‚ we miss you and look foward to seeing you again someday when we join you in heaven.  Rest in Peace. 6–10–1994 to 7–17–2004

what you should do to calm them down is to put them in different cages because my friends friend had to gerbals and she put themin the same cage and she went with a friend to the mall.and when she got back the girl had atted the boy and killed it because there was blood and fur on the cage. then it died.

Hello‚
On September1/2004 My friend and i went to look at our gerbils. We have 7 baby gerbils. They are 2 weeks old. They didnt even open there eyes yet. When we were looking at them we noticed that there were only 6.We were worried and we looked around the cage.My friend Jessica said why dont you look behind the box in the cage.So we looked and there was the baby gerbil. When we picked him up we noticed that he had a little cut on his leg.He was also very very flat.He was cold and his little body was squat.Fastly i called my mom down to look at him.She said he might die but we are not sure yet.The day still isnt over and we are worried about his health. We are doing the best we can at this moment to try to confort him.We ar making sure he dosnt ger hurt by any othere baby or we ar watching him to see if he is breding. This is our secone litter and we now have 18 gerbils counting the mom and dad.We are hopeing he will get better and his health will inprove. We are going to look at him now and we hope to hear back from this website. Thanks   for everything.

Hello‚
I would like to say that there is no need to feel alone because I have lost my gerbil today. He was only 2 weeks old and his eyes are not even open.I have already wrote the website and said that we have not found out if he died yet but he died today. We are very sad but we have many more gerbils. You see me and my friend got a gerbil each and we found out that there was a female and a male.I had a female and my neighbor had a male.So one day we mated them. They had 9 babies and we comntinued to put them together. So far they had 2 littler of babies and we hope some day to have a gerbil farm.So i would like to say that you can always get another gerbils but noone can replace your gerbil Danny.

Hello.  On Valentines Day 2003 we bought 2 baby rat sisters‚ Huccaby and Matilda.  In February of 2004 Matilda became very sick and almost died.  Through many trips to the vet‚ daily antibiotics‚ and lots of love from us and her sister‚ she has somehow hung on.  Matilda is sweet and docile‚ Huccaby fiesty and free–spirited.  We have spent many hours on the bed letting them roam‚ and sometimes holding Matilda seems to be the only thing to calm her when she is having trouble breathing.  Huccaby worried a lot about Matilda‚ and sometimes even broke her rule of not letting us snuggle with her by burrowing under our hand placed on Matilda‚ and sheepishly letting us pet her too.  We have prepared well for the time we know is nearing‚ when we have to put Matilda to sleep.  We have tried to learn how Huccaby will feel and how to help her through the grieving process when her sister goes on.  We thought Huccaby would live to a ripe old age‚ and that maybe she would even become more snuggly.  Even though she was a little prickly‚ we always gave her love and sweetness and scruffles‚ loving her unconditionally.  There were even times when she would at the same time try to avoid our petting‚ and almost run in place to keep from missing the happy feeling of being petted.  Three nights ago‚ we were blindsided‚ and while they were playing on the bed‚ Huccaby suffocated while eating a piece of cereal.  She came to us for help‚ we could see in her eyes her pleading.  We did everything we could‚ but she died in our hands‚ afraid and confused.  It happened so fast‚ it was so unexpected‚ now it is Matilda who is left to grieve with us.  Our hearts go out to all who have lost pets‚ and to all of the sweet animals who have died through tragic circumstances.  We have had other ratties‚ all have died because of awful diseases.  We hurt so much with each one‚ and did all we could to comfort them until they departed.  This one is different for us…more pain‚ guilt and what ifs.  It almost seems like a dream‚ it hasn’t really even hit us yet.  Life is full of surprises‚ not all good.  We thank you all for offering and being a part of this website.  It is a great consolation for us.  We have sat and talked about how wonderful it would be if we could truly be visited by the spirits of our pets one last time.  We buried Huccaby in our backyard among the flowers.  Sitting there‚ we felt‚ like another person who wrote on this website‚ that Huccaby’s spirit was present‚ filling us with a sense of calm and love.  While doing the dishes the morning after she died‚ Jeff said

Hi there.
We want you to know that we know how sad you feel about your little gerbil dying.  We lost our ratty this week‚ and we feel just like you do.  Your little friend knows how much you loved him and we are sending you a big hug because we think that you are wonderful people who cared and took time to do all that you could to try and help your baby gerbil.  We see that you truly care about little creatures‚ and your gerbil farm will be a great success because of your big hearts.  Remember that the reason you feel so sad about your little gerbil is because you have loved him‚ and that is a very special thing.
We are sending him love.  Love Tammy and Jeff

Darlene.

First of all‚ let me say how sorry I am for your loss. I understand what you are going through. My husband and I have both made mistakes when caring for our animals. For a long time I blamed myself when my cat Emma was hit by a car. I found her dead on our porch. She had made every effort to get to me after she was hit by the car. Normally‚ I let my cats out at night (if they choose) and then I let them back in around morning time. But…on this ONE day‚ I did not let my cats in until around 11am. I looked on our porch and found Emma dead. She had tried to get to the front door but could not make it. I felt so guilty. I have learned from my mistakes and I am sure that you will too.

The best way to honor your beloved COCO‚ is to adopt another animal and give it all the love you have to give. You sound like a very special person.

It's so easy to blame ourselves. It wasn't your fault. It was an accident. COCO loves you and you had a wonderful life with COCO.

I really feel that the best way to relieve some of your pain is to open your heart to an animal in need. Also‚ caring for our wildlife is very immportant. In the fall‚ I like to make sure the birds are well stocked up with food for winter. Also‚ don’t forget the squirels:) I love all wild life! Anyway‚ I hope you are feeling better soon!

You can clip the nails. Your best bet is to use baby nail clippers. They are small and lets you see more than get in the way. Also make sure that you stay away from the quick of the nail (the white part of the nail clostest to the paw) If you are scared that you may get to close or if you do go to the beauty store or a place that sells mens shaving supplys and get styptic pencils they look like little white pencils. All you have to do if you make the nail bleed is rubb the pencil on the nail really good and put pressure for about a min. and it should stop bleeding. Good luck its not that hard.

You have to take the male out of the cage before she has the babys. The male WILL eat the babes. It is just the way they are. I would after she has the babies wait about 1 month before putting the male back in there. And also make sure that you do NOT touch the babies after thay are born. They are just like birds if they smeel human sent on the baby they asume that it is hurt and thay will kill it and eat it. Just a little hint to you.
